Day 4: Audience and Purpose

Objectives: Students will be able to...

Understand main vocabulary (voice, mechanics, coherence, unity, etc..) related to composition and how they rank according to importance in an essay.

Understand, choose and write for a specific audience

Understand the difference between and be able to write with a specific purpose in mind.

Daily Plan

Part I: We will review key "component" vocabulary through student mini presentations. We will also take a "quiz" on the five steps of the writing process. Next, in pairs, you will work together to rank those components in relation to their importance in composition. We will then discuss the activity as a group reiterating the purpose and relationship of each component.

Part II: We will watch a short video discussing the importance of Audience in composing and also discuss the meaning of the "lay" "managerial" or "expert" audience.

Part III: We will then discuss Purpose and the main types of purposes in writing (primarily focusing on persuasion  evoking emotion, entertain, explain/define, inform, critique)

Part IV: We will then get into groups and do an activity in which we guess the purpose of the author. We'll share our answers/discuss with the class.  

Part V: Assign and discuss homework--> Reflective paper #1 and Writing for a Purpose Activity. 
Make sure to have this two pieces of homework uploaded onto Dropbox before the start of our next class (3:30pm on Tuesday Sept 11th)
