Day 13: Summary Critique Language & Structure +APA

Lesson Objectives:

• Analyze the Introduction, Body and Conclusion of a Summary Critique
• Look at specific grammar and vocabulary used in academic critiquing 
• Analyze student summary work in terms of appropriate vocabulary and content
• Understand the basics to APA style

Warm Up: Student Introductory Paragraph Homework (5min)
After looking at your homework on Singelton's article, I can see that there is difficulty with neutral language. MOST students wrote bias introductory sentences. We'll take a look at those papers first before we begin today's class and address the issue.Click here to access the document.

Part I: Warm-Up [3:30-3:40 (10min)]

To begin class today, I would like you to get into groups of 3 or 4 and share your thoughts on the first two articles we have read for this assignment.  Orally paraphrase your interpretation of the following:

1. In article #1, what is the authors' thesis (purpose)?
2. How does Kaminski et al. support that thesis?
3. In article #2, what is the authors' thesis (purpose)?
4. How does Peterson support that thesis? 

You will then share your group's responses to these questions with the class.

Part III: Introduction to APA [4:25-4:50 (25 min)]
As many students are unfamiliar with any type of citation format, I will give a short overview into the format of APA. Knowing proper citation format will be critical for this assignment as it is a major component of the grade. Students who have not mastered another type of citations (e.g. Chicago, MLA) are required to use APA for the remainder of the service course assignments. Also, time permitting, I would like you to take a look at this document that demonstrates the difference between MLA formatting and APA formatting.



Homework:
Come Thursday with 2 paper copies of your Summary Critique Draft. Also, have the draft uploaded to your dropbox. It should be labeled Summary Critique Draft and uploaded to your Unit 2 folder.
